Hard Mode, Take 2

A new adventure, a new Zigzagoon... I'll name her Bailey. Found another one and named him Toby. Luckily, the pattern stopped with a couple of Wurmples, now Gwen the Beautifly and Olga the Duskox.

A new Taillow! And you shall be called Zeetha. And I will be much more careful with you. And you Will Never Die.

Grindy grind grind grind, oh, a Whismur. Easy pickings, almost done... Wait, what? Critical Hit? Toby...TOBY... Bailey's all alone now... They were best friends... AVENGE HIM, BAILEY! HEADBUTT THAT WHISMUR'S ASS TO DEATH! I feel so responsible. If I had only given him that protein he found... I wouldn't be surprised if Bailey stopped picking things up for me. I don't deserve her devotion anymore. I'm going to kill all the Whismur in this tunnel for Toby. How many will die before Bailey can look me in the eye again?

Seven, it turns out. She brought me a nice ultraball to show her forgiveness. The loss was hard on the entire team, especially Bailey, but she's a trooper. I briefly considered only having a team of 5 out of respect for my first loss, but knew this would be folly.

Zeak evolved after his sweep of Roxanne's Gym. Jayne the Makuhita was added to the team before Zeetha wiped out Brawly's Gym. I'm going to make sure to grind a lot before I encounter May again. I won't make the same mistakes I made last time.

Cancel'd

And Ishka was next, followed closely by Theo in the battle against Wattson. For some reason, I thought the grass resistance might be enough. I'm calling this a full defeat, as Zigs was paralyzed with half health and all I had aside from her were the other zigzagoons, highest level being 14.

So I will start again, same starter, new name: Zeak.

Joss'd

Thanks for the scarf, dude. Now which one of my pokemon is the most hipster?

First Casualty - Geodude. I thought he'd be so helpful against Wattson, but he fell when I thought he could easily handle a zigzagoon who was two levels above him. Unfortunately, the foe knew Surf, and made short work of my unknowing rock pokemom. The first loss stings, and I suppose I was tempting fate when I spoke of him surviving to the name rater, who lived just beyond where he died. Named my Whismur Ishka, after the mother of Quark and Rom. Zigzagoon, now christend Zags, has rejoined my party to pick things up while I wait to add another to the team.

Route 110. What do you think the first thing I run into was? Yeah. Yeah, it was. And you know what? I caught it. Cuz what the hell? Named it Goon.

Aaaaand I lost Anya to a critical Ember attack in a battle against May. This game is just killing off anything that isn't a Zigzagoon. Lesson learned - do NOT name pokemon after characters that Joss Whedon has killed. Zigs evolved in the same battle, but I refuse to let that overshadow the tragic loss of one of my favorites. After the battle, Zags had found a revive, as if to taunt me. Just hope I can find a flyer elsewhere. In the mean time, I now have room for another gatherer. I fear Ishka may be next.

Items Items Items

A good portion of this session was played in a room with three other guys doing the exact same thing, and two more considering it. I love being a big huge dork.

So the minute I walk on to route 104, I encounter a third Zigzagoon. This one's Zigs, a girl. She's got the best stats of the three, though Stars has been picking up the best items. Interestingly, the one without a nickname has the worst stats. I walked into the Petalburg Woods and ran into yet another Zigzagoon. I now have a subconscious hatred for every pokemon I could have encountered that wasn't a Zigzagoon, for clearly they despise me for some reason. I killed it out of frustration, though for the cost of a pokeball, I might as well have had a 4th gatherer until another way to fill out the party presented itself. As of this posting, the three of them have picked up 10 super potions, 4 ultraballs, 2 full restores, 5 rare candies, 2 revives (pointless except for money in this case) 4 nuggets, a full heal, a protein, and a pp up, and a Taillow in a Pecha tree.

The first gym was a bit scary. I swept it with Theo, but there were some close calls against Roxanne's Nosepass. Later caught a Taillow, named her Anya, and proceeded to sweep the Dewford Gym without a scratch. I'll probably drop one of my 'goons with the Geodude I got in the cave in Dewford. Neglected to name him, will amend this if he survives long enough.

Calling it a night on this one. I need to think of a way to break up sessions, partly because I shouldn't be spending all my time playing pokemon, partly because these entries will become long and tedious.

Session the first

Don't worry, I won't be titling all my entries this way.

For my Ruby version of the challenge, I decided to start with Treeko for various reasons, despite normally going a fire-type starter since my very first Charmander from my blue version back in elementary school. Treeko was the starter for the original Nuzlocke Challenge, the lizard has always appealed to me, and I'm told that Treeko is the hardest to start with in this generation - I figured, if I'm doing a super hard challenge, I might as well go all the way. We'll see how far I get. I named her Theo.

I have had the misfortune to encounter a Wurmple on 101 before getting any pokeballs. Had more luck with 103, and I came back to catch a Zigzagoon. Against my better judgement, I named him Stars to go with Ari's Stripes. On the next route, I encountered another. Figured I might as well catch him to get twice the pick-ups an extra in case one of them dies. Kind of like with twins. I would like a bit of variety, though. Decided against naming him, so as not to become too attached.

I'm calling this session early, have to get dinner and do some actual work.
